A Rainy Day Reminder

It seems that life is a nonstop, fast paced engine that only cautions to slow down on rainy days. If you would have asked me a couple of years ago – I used to hate the rain, hated cloudy days, and hadn’t ever experienced a foggy day. I argued that rainy days used to make me feel lazy, and avoided going outside if I could. Slowly but surely, though, I have developed a certain appreciation for rainy days, and even foggy days. It seems these are the only days that the world can slow down from about 150mph to 60mph, and you can at least see the day as it passes you by.

It rained one day this week in the city. It was more of a very light drizzle by the time I got outside, but I wanted to go out for a run. All was going well for the first 10 minutes, but then with every extra step I kept noticing little things that were side tracking me from my run. Little things like plants, bugs, flowers, leaves or streets that ordinarily I wouldn’t have paid any attention to. But now with rain drops on them, they just looked so different, luminous and worth taking time to observe.  So while my run turned into a walk, I slowed down to snap some pictures of things that I ordinarily wouldn’t take the time to observe.

I guess it served me as another reminder that sometimes you need to slow down your life. Life will always present you with a busy calendar; your weeks will always get filled with work and errands, and your weekends will always fly by when it’s time to have fun.  The key to it all is being able to balance your life with your fun, but to make sure you have time to stop and enjoy and appreciate the little things in life. It’s the little things after all, that even make this life worthwhile. So even if it’s not rainy outside, take some time to appreciate the rain drops and enjoy something little.

Enjoy the little things in life, because one day you’ll wake up and realize that they were the big things”
